Group Benefits Coverage
Homeopathy on Employee Benefits in Canada
Advocating for Homeopathy in Employer Health Plans
Homeopathy is one of Canada’s safest and most accessible health professions—yet it is still missing from most Canadian group benefit plans. Today, the only way most employees can access homeopathic treatment is by out-of-pocket expense or if their benefit plan includes a Health Spending Account (HSA). Homeopathy can be covered by all major group benefit companies, and there is a small percentage of employers who do have homeopathy covered as a distinct insurable healthcare modality. However, it is not one of the top-demanded modalities, so insurers rarely recommend it.
Homeopathy is already eligible for coverage by every major insurance provider in Canada, including Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Green Shield Canada, Desjardins, Equitable Life and Industrial Alliance. The reason it isn’t?
Most employers simply don’t know to ask.
The Ontario Alliance for Homeopathic Advancement (OAHA) is working to change that. Expanding coverage means greater access, affordability and fairness for both patients and practitioners.
The Current Landscape: Homeopathy and Group Benefits
Although insurers are capable of adding homeopathy as a standard extended health benefit, they rarely do so automatically. Insurance companies typically recommend high-demand modalities—such as massage therapy, chiropractic care and naturopathy—leaving lesser-known but highly effective regulated professions, like homeopathy, off HR managers’ radar.
Key Barriers Today:
- Homeopathy is not yet a top-requested modality by employers.
- Many HR professionals and benefits advisors do not realize homeopathy is a regulated profession in Ontario with provincial homeopathic associations throughout the rest of Canada.
- Insurers only add modalities when employers specifically request them.
- Homeopathy remains lumped under a Health Spending Account (HSA) rather than recognized as its own category - with the exception of a small percentage of companies that do have homeopathy covered as a modality.
OAHA is actively engaging with employers, insurance providers, and benefits brokers to change this trend—and bring homeopathy into mainstream benefit coverage where it belongs.
A Regulated Profession Worth Including
Homeopathy is a regulated profession in Ontario under the College of Homeopaths in Ontario (since 2015). Registered Homeopaths meet standards of training, conduct, safety, and accountability. In the other Canadian provinces homeopathic practitioners are members of their provincial associations who oversee education qualifications and liability insurance.
Why Homeopathy Deserves Coverage
A Healthier Workforce. Lower Costs. Evidence-Based Results
Including homeopathy in group benefit plans supports employee well-being, enhances workplace productivity, and helps create a more sustainable healthcare model in Canada. Here’s why homeopathic coverage makes sense for both employers and employees:
01.
Cost-Effective and Accessible
Homeopathic medicines are affordable and widely available in Canada, making them accessible to people across all income levels. By encouraging the use of cost-effective homeopathic options, employers can help reduce overall prescription drug costs and support more sustainable health spending.
02.
Focus on the Root Cause
Homeopathy addresses the underlying causes of illness rather than just managing symptoms. By supporting the body’s natural healing processes, homeopathic treatment can lead to more lasting improvements in health and well-being.
03.
Reduced Sick Leave and Absenteeism
Studies and real-world outcomes have shown that individuals using homeopathic care often experience improved vitality and fewer recurrent illnesses—helping reduce sick leave and supporting a healthier, more resilient workforce.
04.
Support for Chronic Conditions
Homeopathy can be a valuable complementary approach for chronic conditions, providing symptom relief and improved quality of life. Many Canadians report measurable improvement in long-term health concerns when homeopathic medicine is part of their care plan.
05.
Mental, Emotional and Physical Wellness
Homeopathy recognizes the deep connection between mind, body, and emotions. Its individualized approach makes it especially effective in supporting mental and emotional well-being—important factors in workplace health and stress management.
06.
Regulated and Recognized
Homeopathy is a regulated profession in Ontario, overseen by the College of Homeopaths of Ontario (CHO). In addition, homeopathic medicines sold in Canada are regulated by Health Canada and issued a DIN-HM (Drug Identification Number – Homeopathic Medicine). This ensures product safety, quality, and consumer confidence.

What Insurance Providers Should Know
Homeopathy is already integrated into the public health systems in countries such as Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, Romania, India, Pakistan, Brazil, Cuba and Mexico. Research from these regions shows:
High patient satisfaction and positive clincal outcomes
Lower overall healthcare spending
Effective management of chronic and recurring conditions
Reduced reliance on high-cost pharmaceuticals
How Employers Can Add Homeopathy to Their Plan
Adding homeopathy is simple:
- Ask your benefits advisor or insurer to add “Homeopathy/Registered Homeopaths” as a paramedical category.
- Specify the coverage amount, usually $300 – $800 per year. Even a small annual coverage amount gives employees access to care they otherwise could not afford.
- Request that only Registered Homeopaths in Ontario (members of the College of Homeopaths of Ontario (CHO) are eligible for reimbursement and in the other provinces that homeopaths belong to their provincial homeopathic association.
- The insurer updates the plan – often with no additional administrative cost.
If the employer/HR/benefits coordinator does not take this step, homeopathy will remain excluded.
